Toronto [Canada]Aug. 24 (ANI): Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met with the Australian parliamentary delegation on the sidelines of the 65th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Halifax, Canada on Tuesday.
Birla, in her interaction with the Australian delegation, highlighted the role of youth in nation building and emphasized that young women and men from both countries should interact regularly and contribute to development through knowledge sharing.
He urged promoting people-to-people contacts between the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations.
“It was the right decision in the right direction to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. Legislators from India and Australia should regularly interact with each other and exchange best practices and implementation modules that will strengthen parliamentary democracy,” the Lok Sabha spokesperson said.
Birla commended the Indian Diaspora for celebrating the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on foreign soil at the end of the nation’s 75 years of independence.
He said the tricolor binds all Indians around the world. “In the Amrit Kaal, Indians abroad celebrated Independence Day and made it a global celebration,” Birla added.

Referring to standing parliamentary committees, Birla said such committees are effective mechanisms to ensure accountability of the executive.
“Therefore, to strengthen the legislature, the committee system must be strengthened,” Birla said. He also invited lawmakers and officials of the Australian Parliament to undergo training on PRIDE.
In his speech, the Lok Sabha chairman highlighted the sporting ties between the two countries, saying cricket is a passion in India and Australia.
“The two countries’ cricket teams are expected to meet regularly, which will improve people-to-people contacts between the two countries,” he added.
Later, Birla also attended a meeting of the Indian delegation chairpersons and parliamentarians and urged them to present India’s perspective in the deliberations and contribute positively to the success of the conference.
The Lok Sabha speaker then attended the opening ceremony of the 65th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference and interacted with presidents and parliamentarians from other Commonwealth countries.
On this occasion, he reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy and making legislatures inclusive.
During the current conference, MP (Lok Sabha) Anurag Sharma was appointed PCA Treasurer by the PCA Executive Committee by an overwhelming majority.
Today, Lok Sabha Speaker Birla will participate as a panelist in a workshop titled “A People’s Parliament: Accessibility through Innovation”.
The Lok Sabha president arrived in Toronto on Monday to attend the 65th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference.
The President is leading the Indian parliamentary delegation which will hold bilateral discussions with the Speakers of world legislatures and parliamentarians to strengthen democracy. (ANI)
