Why blame Nehru for people’s problems instead of admitting his mistakes, Manmohan Singh asks government

“China occupies our pious land for a year but tries to bury the problem,” says Dr Manmohan Singh

Narendra Modi’s government cannot escape responsibility for “mismanaging” the country by blaming the country’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, former prime minister Manmohan Singh said on Thursday.

In his first video aimed at voters in Punjab ahead of the February 20 election, Dr Singh said one should be aware of the dignity of the Prime Minister’s Office. Everyone who used to attack him as being silent and leading a weak and corrupt government was now exposed.

Targeting the Center on a host of issues including farmer unrest, rising prices, unemployment and foreign policy, he accused the BJP of following a “false nationalism” that followed the divide and rule policy adopted by the British.

The video, in which Dr Singh also raised the issue of Prime Minister Modi‘s convoy security breach in Feorzepur last month, was released at a press conference in Chandigarh.

“A few days ago, in the name of the security of the Prime Minister, an attempt was made to defame the Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and the people of the state. During the farmers’ unrest also, an attempt was made to defame Punjab and Punjabiyat,” he said in his nearly 10-minute post in Punjabi.

“Failure” of foreign policy

According to him, the government had turned out to be a “complete failure” on the issue of foreign policy. He alleged that Chinese troops “have been occupying our pious land for a year, but efforts are being made to bury this problem.” The government did not have confidence in the Constitution and “the institutions are continually weakened”.

“On the one hand, people are facing problems of rising prices and unemployment and on the other, the government, in power for seven and a half years, rather than admitting its mistakes and redeeming itself, blames always first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to be responsible for people’s problems,” he said.

“I firmly believe that the post of Prime Minister has a special dignity and that by blaming history, one cannot reduce one’s sins. Prime Minister for 10 years, I have always preferred that my work speaks for itself. We have never divided the country for political gain. We never tried to hide the truth. Never allowed the prestige of the country to be lowered,” he observed.

While the whole world hailed the bravery, patriotism and sacrifice of the Punjabis, the government said none of this. “As a true Indian from Punjab, all these things hurt me deeply,” he said.

Emphasizing the need to address Punjab’s development, agriculture and unemployment issues, he said only Congress can provide governance. He called on voters to ensure that Congress emerges victorious.
