Uttar Pradesh: Varanasi has been proposed as the first-ever Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) tourism and cultural capital for the years 2022-2023.

In Samarkand, Uzbekistan, during the 22nd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO, the appointment was made public.
On Saturday in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, during the 22nd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO, the appointment was made public. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister, was present at the meeting.
It will encourage travel, cultural exchange and humanitarian efforts between India and SCO member countries if Varanasi is named the first ever tourism and cultural capital of the SCO. It also highlights India’s long-standing cultural ties with SCO members, especially Central Asian countries.

Various events will take place in Varanasi throughout 2022-2023 as part of this important cultural outreach effort, and guests from SCO member countries will be invited to attend. Indologists, scholars, writers, musicians, artists, photojournalists, travel bloggers and other guests are expected to attend these activities.

“By designating Varanasi as the first-ever SCO tourism and cultural capital, India and SCO member countries will be encouraged to exchange tourists, artists and other cultural and humanitarian assets. It also highlights India’s long-standing cultural ties with SCO members, especially Central Asian countries,” according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
