Use only clay Ganesh idols, recommends Visakhapatnam Collector
District Collector A. Mallikarjuna called on the authorities to ensure the availability of eco-friendly Ganesh idols or clay Ganesh idols in all areas without fail. He also asked them to carry out large-scale awareness campaigns on the exclusive use of clay idols. The collector held a review meeting on Saturday on the arrangements made for “Ganesh Puja”, particularly the arrangement of pandals, dumping places and police surveillance during the festival. Police Commissioner Ch. Srikanth and GVMC Commissioner G. Lakshmisha attended the meeting.
Mr. Mallikarjuna said there were eight designated places for the immersion of Ganesh idols and people should only perform the immersion at these places. He said that the organizing committees must obtain the necessary authorizations to organize pandals.
Police Commissioner Ch. Srikanth has instructed officials to dispose of swimmers at the dump sites. Given the possible traffic problems, pandal organizing committees should ensure that they have a mechanic in case the vehicle breaks down during the immersion procedure. He said brochures should be distributed in apartments and educational institutions.
DCP Sumit Garud Sunil, DMHO K. Vijayalakshmi and others were present.
“Take a selfie, win prizes”
Meanwhile, GVMC Commissioner G. Lakshmisha held a video conference with all Sachivalayam secretaries, officers and staff of GVMC here on Saturday.
Mr. Lakshmisha asked the secretaries to ensure that all households in their neighborhoods use only clay Ganesh idols. Secretaries can take selfies with inmates with the clay idols and send them to GVMC. “We were picking the good ones and giving prizes,” he said.
He asked officials to ensure that roads are not dug anywhere to organize pandals. He also asked officials to organize the sale of clay idols of Ganesh to benefit self-help groups at the Beach Road eco-bazaar.
