Tamil Nadu inoculates 12.62 lakh people against Covid-19 in mass vaccination campaign

Chennai News live updates today: Tamil Nadu vaccinated 12,62,089 people against Covid-19 on Sunday in the 36th statewide mega-vaccination, the health ministry said. A total of 61,202 people received the first dose, 2,98,634 the second dose, while 9,02,253 people received the preventive booster dose, according to a press release here. The total number of people who have been vaccinated (over the age of 18) with the first dose includes 96.49% and the second 91.09%.

New Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu stood at 431, including a returnee from Uttar Pradesh, bringing the total number of cases to 35,73,667, the health ministry said on Sunday, reported PTI. There were no new deaths and the death toll remained unchanged at 38,038, according to a bulletin here. As many as 461 people have recovered from the virus in the past 24 hours, totaling 35, 30,763, leaving 4,866 active cases. Chennai has seen cases rise slightly in recent days. It rose to 86 today from 85 on Saturday. On Friday there were 87 cases while on Thursday there were 85. Coimbatore reported 54 while the rest were spread across other districts.

In other news, a 13-year-old girl is believed to have died by suicide near here, police said on Sunday, reports PTI. Police say the girl was one of three children of Hasanure Mulla, 48, a West Bengal resident who works in a brick kiln in Anthiyur near here. On Saturday, the girl hanged herself in the house. Seeing this, her parents and neighbors took her to the hospital where she died, police said. An investigation to find the reason for this extreme measure has begun, they said.
