IMPHAL: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Tuesday launched a blistering attack on the BJP in Manipur, accusing the state’s ruling party of disrespecting the mandate of the people and using “intimidation and corruption” as a tool to form government in the state where Congress had become the largest party in the 2017 election.

Promising to pursue “a policy of development”, she said more jobs would be created in the state, whose tourism potential would be fully utilized.

Addressing a campaign rally in Imphal online, Gandhi also vowed to “protect the civil liberties and democratic rights” of all residents of the state affected by the militancy.

“You elected the Congress party but got a different government,” she said.

The 2017 state elections had caused a stalled assembly where neither Congress nor the BJP had a majority in the 60-member House.

Although the Congress came close to the magic mark of 31 seats with 28 MPs, the BJP overtook it with the help of smaller parties like Conrad Sangma’s NPP and the Naga People’s Front, among others.

“When the way to come to power is fundamentally wrong, when it involves pressure tactics, bullying and bribery, what can be the actions of such a government? The mandate of the election of 2017 continues to be flouted,” she said.

She accused the BJP of neglecting Manipur like other North Eastern states.

“The traditions, customs and way of life of the people of Manipur should be fully respected,” she said.

The Congress leader also promised unemployment benefits for the state’s youth and legislation that will guarantee her people the right to health care, if her party is elected to power, in addition to free public transportation for women.

She said steps will be taken to ensure multi-cropping and provision of clean water.

Gandhi said the state’s bamboo industry, as well as medicinal and aromatic plants, will be promoted and its huge hydropower potential exploited.

“The Congress party will carry on the policy of development,” she said, adding that when people have jobs in the state, they will not have to migrate elsewhere to earn a living.

She also attacked N Biren Singh’s government for its handling of the Covid crisis, saying that despite a small population, Manipur has recorded a disproportionate death toll.
