The government said on Friday that more than four lakh 16,000 Indian workers had migrated until last month to 18 required emigration control (RCT) countries for overseas employment since 2020. In a written response to the Lok Sabha , External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said whenever an Indian migrant worker dies overseas, the Indian mission or post concerned provides the necessary immediate assistance.

The Foreign Minister said that Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana is a compulsory insurance scheme for Indian migrant workers. The scheme provides insurance coverage of Rs 10 lakh and other benefits in the event of accidental death or permanent disability resulting in job loss at a nominal insurance premium of Rs 275 for two years or Rs 375 for three years of validity.

Dr. Jaishankar said that cases of accidental deaths of Indian citizens are investigated by the respective police authorities and law enforcement agencies of the country concerned. However, in cases where the families of the deceased request an autopsy or re-enquiry, the Indian Mission or Post overseas liaises with the foreign government concerned to facilitate the same.

Of 2,570 death-related grievances registered, he said, 2,478 have been resolved. The government has taken several steps to facilitate the resolution of grievances.
