Need for a robust cage culture system in tanks: Jatindra Nath Swain
The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairy, Government of India today held a webinar on “Cage Aquaculture in the Reservoir: The Sleeping Giants” as part of “Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav”. The event was chaired by Shri Jatindra Nath Swain, Secretary, Department of Fisheries (DoF), Government of India (GOI) and attracted around 100 participants, including officials from the Department of Fisheries, GoI and officials fisheries from different states/UTs. , national agricultural, veterinary and fisheries university faculties, entrepreneurs, scientists, farmers, hatchery owners, students and aquaculture industry stakeholders across the country.
The webinar began with a welcome speech by Shri IA Siddiqui, Commissioner for Fisheries Development, DoF, along with the introduction of the webinar theme and eminent panelists, Shri Jatindra Nath Swain, Secretary, Shri Sagar Mehra, Co-Secretary (inland fisheries) with Dr. BK Das, Director, ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) and other participants.
In his inaugural address, the Union Fisheries Secretary, Shri Swain, stated the importance of tanks and cage aquaculture for the development of the fisheries sector. In addition, Mr. Swain advised having a robust cage culture system in the reservoirs, including potential markets, to ensure good incomes for farmers and highlighted the success stories across the world and the country. . Mr. Swain also called on scientists and State/Utate Fisheries Departments to motivate fish farmers and develop innovative ways and policies to increase profits, reduce the cost of inputs, diversify species and increase production and the productivity of cage culture systems in reservoirs.
Shri Sagar Mehra, JS (Inland Fisheries), in his opening remarks, briefly indicated the pivotal role of reservoir fisheries and aquaculture in improving fish production using enclosures such as than cages. Further, Shri Mehra added that cage systems make efficient use of water bodies by harnessing their natural productivity and are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. The Department of Fisheries, Government of India has earmarked investment targets for the promotion of cage aquaculture under the flagship program Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
During the technical session, Dr. BK Das, Director of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute of ICAR (CIFRI) gave a comprehensive presentation on “Cage Aquaculture in the Reservoir: The Sleeping Giants and presented various technologies, opportunities and activities developed by ICAR-CIFRI. for the diversification of cage aquaculture in various parts of the country as well as various skills and capacity development programs for farmers and stakeholders. Dr. Das stressed the need to promote cage aquaculture in reservoirs nationwide by following good management practices and providing support services and CIFRI stands ready to partner in tandem with states and the Uts for a knowledge support on the technological background for various perspectives of fenced fish farming.
Following the presentation, a town hall meeting was held with fish farmers, entrepreneurs, hatchery owners, students, scientists and university professors. After discussion, the webinar ended with a vote of thanks offered by Dr. SK Dwivedi, Deputy Commissioner, DoF.
