Monkeypox update: Doctors warn infected people to stay away from pets

Amid the spread of monkeypox cases in the United States, health officials on August 16 warned infected people to stay away from pets because the animals could be at risk of catching the virus.

The disease, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has had advice in place for months as monkeypox spreads across the United States, has regained attention following the Lancet medical journal published the last week which reported that an Italian greyhound had caught the virus in France.

According to the report, the dog is owned by a couple who said they sleep next to the animal. As the couple – both men – were infected with monkeypox after having sex and ended up with lesions and other symptoms, their greyhound also later developed lesions and was diagnosed with it. the virus.

Monkeypox infections have been detected in rodents and other wildlife and can transmit the virus to humans. However, the report claims that this is the first report of monkeypox infection in a domestic animal such as a dog or cat.

The CDC, meanwhile, has advised that pets that come into close contact with a symptomatic person be kept home and away from other animals and people for 21 days after the most recent contact.

On August 13, India reported its 10th case of monkeypox after an African woman, who had traveled to Nigeria, tested positive for the virus. She was admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital. The 22-year-old is currently under observation in hospital.

India’s first case of monkeypox was reported in Kollam district of Kerala on July 14. India has so far reported 10 cases of monkeypox in the country, including the recent one which was recorded in the nation’s capital.
