KOCHI: During a major drug trafficking, the excise team seized Sunday 3 kg of MDMA worth Rs 2 crore at Aluva station. Two people, Sainulabdeen, 27, and Rahul Subash, 28, from Kodungalloor were arrested in connection with the transport.

The contraband hidden in panipuri packages and juice boxes was smuggled from Delhi by the Mangala Express. According to excise officials, the arrested duo confessed to bringing drugs for New Year’s celebrations. Rahul Subhash is a former sportsman who attended the national hammer-throwing games in 2010-11, officials said.

The department had received information about the duo’s involvement in drug trafficking in recent months and had therefore placed them under surveillance. Based on reports that the two had boarded a smuggled train from Delhi, a team of plainclothes excise officials boarded the train from another station and watched them.

When the train reached Aluva, the two picked up a package kept on a bunk away from their seats. On their descent, the Railways and Excise Protection Force teams stopped them from the platform and inspected their luggage.
