The state government said on Saturday that some people were trying to defame the administration’s image over the Malbazar flash flood incident that claimed the lives of eight people.

In a statement released here on Friday evening, the government said: “A tragic incident took place on October 5 in Malbazar, which resulted in the death of eight people and the injury of 14 others. Of the 14, eight have been discharged from hospital, while the rest are undergoing treatment at Mal Subdivision Hospital.

“Unfortunately, some of the people with special interests are trying to denigrate the image of the state government and people’s representatives because of a natural calamity. This is highly reprehensible. People are being misled in their making it appear that the administration did not take action to prevent the situation. This is not true,” the government said.

A nine-member BJP delegation visited Malbazar area of ​​Jalpaiguri district on Friday and met with the families of those who were killed during the sudden flooding of the Mal River during the immersion of Durga idols. Wednesday.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the incident. They also announced Rs 50,000 each to the injured.
