Launch of “People’s Movement for Clean Cities” in Madurai
As part of the celebration of the 99th birthday of former Chief Minister Mr. Karunanidhi, the “people’s movement for clean cities” was launched and a series of events were held here and on Friday.
The Minister of Commercial Taxes and Registration, P. Moorthy, inaugurated a mass clean-up campaign and awareness rally at the MGR bus stop in Mattuthavani.
Later, along with Mayor Indrani Ponvasanth, Deputy Mayor T. Nagarajan, Collector S. Aneesh Sekhar, and Society Commissioner Simranjeet Singh Kahlon, he released an audio instruction on clean cities.
The most successful conservation workers received certificates of appreciation and souvenirs from Mr. Moorthy, who also distributed cloth bags (manjaipai) to the public.
Conservation workers, along with the public, have taken an oath to keep the city clean under the label “My Trash, My Responsibility”.
Later, Mr Moorthy reported on an awareness rally organized by students and conservation workers from the bus stop to the flower market.
Planting young trees
Mayor Indrani Ponvasanth participated in sapling planting events held at Periyar Bus Station and Thirumalai Nayak Palace. She also reported a clean-up campaign at the bus stop premises.
Ms. Ponvasanth and Mr. Kahlon handed out public awareness flyers at the bus stop.
