MYSURU: Bharat Jodo Yatra by Congress suffered a minor setback when people were uprooted and fled with metal poles erected on the Gundlupet-Mysuru highway as part of its decoration to welcome party leader Rahul Gandhi.

The workers and party cadres who toiled up the poles all day did not expect those attending the inaugural event to steal the poles. Many enthusiastic villagers, who participated in the Yatra, were seen carrying the poles without flags, as it could earn them money from the scrap dealers.

When questioned, Nanjaiah, who lives near Kelasuru, said he took seven poles. “We’re fighting inflation and it’s really hard to make a living working as a day labourer. There’s no harm or crime in taking them,” he said and began to run away in the face of further questions.

Although Congress organized lunches, snacks, dinners and tea parties that included buttermilk and sugarcane juice, many were seen carrying bottles of water and at least 10 to 12 bananas as organizers were exhausted from distributing them to thousands of people under the scorching sun.
