Vijaywada (Andhra Pradesh) [India]Mar 21 (ANI): More than 70,000 people have been arrested in connection with illicit alcohol manufacturing in the past year and a half in Andhra Pradesh, officials have said.

“In a year and a half since the establishment of the Special Law Enforcement Bureau, more than 70,000 people have been arrested. It is one of such bureaus across the country,” said Rajat Bhargava, Special Chief Secretary (Excise and Trade Taxes), Andhra Pradesh Sunday.

The Special Chief Secretary further stated that tons of black jaggery, which is the main ingredient in the manufacture of illicit alcohol, has been destroyed over the past two years by the Special Enforcement Bureau.

“As per the orders of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, we will take action against anyone found manufacturing illicit alcohol. No one will be banned,” Bhargava said.

It comes as the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) staged a protest on Saturday in Vijayawada against the ruling YSRCP government, alleging the rise of illicit alcohol in the state.

TDP MP Gadde Ramamohan, one of the protesters, claimed that liquor brands sold in Andhra Pradesh are made by YSRCP MPs and relatives of the Chief Minister to make money.

“These liquor brands sold in Andhra Pradesh are not sold in other states. They are made by YSRCP MPs and CM’s parents, they make money,” Ramamohan told ANI in showing alcohol marks. (ANI)
