Kannur district, which hosts various events organized as part of the celebration of the first anniversary of the second government of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the 23rd Congress of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]is witnessing the unprecedented arrival of large groups of people.

The city is inundated with people and vehicles, leaving most roads and tourist destinations choked. For visitors, it has become difficult to find accommodation as there are virtually no rooms left in hotels and resorts. Most rooms are occupied until the last day of the party congress on Sunday.

Despite restricted access to the EK Nayanar Academy in Burnassery where a large number of national leaders attend the party congress, there is a rush of people to the venue to take pictures.

The visit of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Congress Leader KV Thomas, who is attending the seminar defying the order of party leaders, is expected to draw more people to the city on Saturday.

The situation is no different at the “Ente Kerala” exhibition organized as part of the government’s first anniversary celebrations. Visiting hours have been extended by one hour due to the crowds. Organizers of the event said more than eight lakh people will visit the city in the coming days

Taking the situation into account, senior police officials met to assess security arrangements. More police have been deployed from nearby districts to provide security and control traffic. Security is headed by 10 Assistant Superintendents of Police and over 30 House Station officers. No less than 10 tahsildars have been appointed as executive magistrates, while two are in charge of law and order every day until Sunday.
