How This Company’s Oxygen Machine Helps People Breathe Easily

A Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), he is a Professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata, India and directs the Environmentally Friendly Applied Materials Laboratory (EFAML) in the Department of Chemical Sciences, IISER-Kolkata. His wife, Dr. Pei Liang, completed her MBBS in China and obtained an MSc and PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Bielefeld, Germany. She is Director of Brain and Cognition Research Center, Department of Psychology, Faculty of Education, Hubei University. She is Deputy Director of Brain Imaging Research Center, Changshu No. 2 Hospital, China. The two founded Solaire Initiative Pvt Ltd to address profound scientific innovations and their applications and to bridge the gap between oxygen demand and supply, to begin with. They were ably supported by Prasanta K Panigrahi, a professor of physics at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata, who had completed his doctoral work at the University of Rochester and after post-doctoral stays in the States United and Canada, he had joined the school. of Physics, University of Hyderabad. Speaking to Bizz Buzz exclusively, Dr. Soumyajit Roy, Founder-Director, Solaire Initiative Pvt Ltd, deciphers their recent scientific innovation, its USPs and their future plans.

We now work with a limited, modular and scalable assembly line. The product also led to the selection of the startup in the prestigious Webel-BCCI Bengal incubator in Saltlake. We have an inventory of 50 devices and have sold 70 devices to date. We want to expand the entire facility with the grant so that we can manufacture these devices anywhere, anytime, from the remote Himalayas to Haringhata, where healthcare must be affordable and available to everyone. .

To bridge the gap between oxygen demand and supply, Solaire Initiative has introduced OM-Redox, an oxygen generator device. It is an oxygen concentrator with a capacity of 3.5 litres/minute. Oxygen purity is over 90% even at a flow rate of 3.5 litres/minute and is hydrated such that a humidifier is not required. It is based on patented proprietary technology developed by a group of scientists and engineers from six leading universities in Europe and Asia. It is ISO-9001:2015, WHO-GMP, CE certified and comes with a one-year warranty. It weighs about 8 kg and has a lifespan of about 4,000 to 5,000 hours depending on environmental conditions. It has an excellent built-in backup battery of up to 4 hours and can also work with external power.

Your ‘OM Redox, Your Oxygen Box’ has just been recognized for Deep Science Innovation by PM Narendra Modi under ’75 under 75 and Atmanirbhar Bharat’. It is also presented by DBT-BIRAC. But how did your entrepreneurial adventure begin?

I have always believed in the power of technology. With over 90 published papers and 12 applied patents under my belt, I have always wanted to apply and use these technologies and in-depth studies for the betterment of human life. And my entrepreneurial journey started with the establishment of Solaire Initiative Pvt Ltd on May 15, 2019. It aims to develop deep scientific innovation. Co-founded and led by scientists/academics, the business model of the entity is to develop products/services by translating science to solve pressing problems in the field of health, clean technologies and green technologies, and to demonstrate the proof of product/prototype concept and then authorize the manufacture and marketing of the solutions to appropriate partners. The revenue model is therefore to license the solutions created by using science and developing the deep innovation technology of these. Solaire Initiative is part of the Startup India initiative and is an ISO-9000 certified company. We have pioneering work in the field of soft oxometalates (SOM) and polyoxometalates (POM) in electro and photocatalysis. Together with my colleagues, I invented OM Redox, a social innovation to ensure that every Indian gets oxygen at an affordable price by plugging and switching a simple device.

What has the company done so far?

We are a group of scientists, physicians and engineers from leading universities around the world who have developed patented indigenous technology at the interface of chemical, physical and engineering sciences to meet the immediate challenge of making affordable health care. With this in mind, we have recently developed a revolutionary technology in our brand new OM Redox product based on the electrocatalytic oxidation of water using a patented design device using a patented catalyst. Widely acclaimed in various media and news outlets, OM Redox aims to be an affordable oxygen companion that runs on electricity and with battery backup so you never have to worry about your need for oxygen. Our R&D activity revolves around developing research around the topic of Oxygen Manufacturing (OM) and making the research results available in the form of a product (Om Redox) affordable to Indians and people around the world wherever oxygenation is required, even in an extra-terrestrial environment. is envisioned as that of Mars, where human habitation will soon become a reality.

So are you only in R&D, or are you also in large-scale manufacturing?

At Solaire, we work with zero inventory. We have teamed up with branded and reliable manufacturing partners/suppliers like Exide (for battery), Supreme (for mould), Chemould (for exterior), etc. and we work in the “Toyota model” where we manufacture the device (Om Redox) on demand. We now work with a limited, modular and scalable assembly line. The product also led to the selection of the startup in the prestigious Webel-BCCI Bengal incubator in Saltlake. What are the USPs of your technology?

The USPs of our technology are:

– The product works with backup battery and continuous electricity, so it can meet stationary and mobile oxygen demand for continuous and prolonged use.

– The product is light (8.5 kg) and portable.

– The price of the product is cheap.

– The technology is a new technology in the context of humidified, ready-to-use medical oxygen, the world’s first new technology in the production of oxygen to be certified by BE CE and WHO.

The technology is totally “Made in India” and developed with science by Indian scientists and technocrats.

How is the competitive landscape?

The Indian medical oxygen market is now dominated by oxygen cylinder suppliers and, to a lesser extent, oxygen concentrators. Technologically speaking, as in the global scenario, the local national oxygen production scenario depends on PSA technology and concentrator technology. We are introducing a third technology using EWOR (Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation Reaction) technology in our OM REDOX product. Longfian Scitech Co, Ltd and Philips Respironics account for 66% of this market segment (Figure 6). A recent report by PATH states that “of the top 15 oxygen concentrator companies identified in India’s PATH, 11 had products with United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval or bearing European Conformity (CE)”. It should be noted that our product is the only one to be CE and WHO certified and equipped with a new technology, capable of creating a paradigm shift in the landscape of stationary and mobile medical oxygen production.

Is the market ready for such products and how affordable is your product?

We have already started selling the product and we have already sold 70 units of the device. The market response is very good and we have only received orders from loyal customers or on customer referrals. However, we have not undertaken an extensive/targeted marketing and marketing campaign which is planned and can be facilitated by the DBT-BIRAC grant. The product is for affordable health care and ensuring that no one gets breathless from lack of oxygen. We have a competitive price for the product at a very affordable cost. Our goal is to serve ordinary people and we envision that every household in India can afford an Om Redox, an oxygen box.
