Honoring culture and literature is the hallmark of a healthy society – TV Mohandas Pai

Mangaluru: A community will progress if works on language, culture and literature, and the people associated with it, are honoured, said Shri TV Mohandas Pai, President of Manipal Global Education, during the congratulatory speech at the Vishwa Konkani Puraskar 2022 , the annual awards ceremony. organized by Konkani Bhas Ani Sanskriti Prathistan, World Konkani Centre, Mangaluru on Sunday March 20, 2022 at 10:00 am

He further emphasized that the youth in the community must be equipped with this knowledge to achieve higher milestones. The Vishwa Konkani Puraskar, consisting of 3 awards on Konkani literature in the name of Smt. Vimala V. Pai, and 2 social service awards rendered by Konkani people on behalf of Shri Basti Vaman Shenoy, the late founder of the World Konkani Center.

The prizes were awarded by Damodar Mauzo, the Konkani writer who won the Jnanpith Prize. He recalled that in 2012 he received the Vimala V. Pai Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Puraskar. He said that with the inspiration of the prizes, he could contribute more to Konkani literature and was later chosen for the world’s top prizes, including the Jnanapith Prize, the country’s highest literary award. He congratulated the 2021 Vishwa Konkani Award winners and wished them that they too will be inspired to do greater work in the future and honored with national and international awards for their work.

Shri Nandagopal Shenoy, President, Konkani Bhas ani Sanskriti Prathistan, welcomed the dignitaries and the gathering.

Vimala V. Pai Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Puraskar awarded for Best Konkani Book of the Year was awarded to Antony Barkur for “Massam (मासां), a collection of Konkani short stories. Konkani poet Uday Mhambro was conferred with Vimala V Pai Vishwa Konkani Kavita Kruti Puraskar for his anthology of poems, Indradhonu Udeum (इंद्रधोणू उदेवं) Veteran grammarian and lexicographer Konkani Shri Suresh Jaywant Borkar was conferred with Vimala V. pedagogy, grammar and lexicography of the Konkani language.

Smt Corrine A. Rasquinha and Dr Padmanabha Kamath were awarded the Basti Vaman Shenoy Seva Puraskar 2021. Corrine A. Rasqinha was commended for her tremendous work on the deprived in society through her White Doves Foundation. Dr. Padmanabha Kamath is the Cardiology Founder at Doorstep Foundation which has established a network of Cardiologists and ECG machines in rural India.

The prizes carry a cash prize of Rs 1.00 Lakh each and a souvenir.

Trustees Melvyn Rodrigues, Payyanur Ramesh Pai, Gilbert D’Souza, BR Bhat and Dr. Kiran Budkuey escorted the winners to the dais and introduced them to the audience.

Damodar Mauzo was honored with Temples of Goa, Coffee Table Book in gratitude for taking Konkani literature to great heights.

Shri Giridhar Kamath, Secretary, Konkani Bhas Ani Sanskriti Prathistan delivered the vote of thanks.
