Hardik Pandya hints at some T20Is debut v Ireland

Indian team captain Hardik Pandya has hinted that the visitors could give a first selection to a few players in the T20I series against Ireland. Hardik will captain the Indian team for the first time in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma who is currently part of the red ball squad for the postponed fifth Test match against England.

India will miss the services of several senior players including Rohit, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant in the two-game series against Ireland. In their absence, several youngsters including Rahul Tripathi, Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh are selected for the series as replacement skipper Pandya said a few selections will be given in the series.

“We want to give people chances, but we also want to play our best XI. There will be situations where there will be a few picks but more than anything it’s about making sure we have the best XI,” Pandya said in the press conference ahead of the first T20I.

Meanwhile, Pandya impressed many with his captaincy abilities in IPL 2022 where he guided Gujarat Titans to title victory in their debut season.

Pandya, who was Rishabh Pant’s assistant in the recently concluded T20I series against South Africa, was elevated to a leadership role when the wicketkeeper striker joined the Test squad for the England game .

India‘s young squad in Ireland will also miss the guidance of Rahul Dravid who has also joined the Test squad. While its NCA leader VVS Laxman travels with Hardik and Co. on the Ireland tour to guide them.

Talking about leading India for the first time, Pandya said he doesn’t want to show anything to anyone and is focused on winning the team.

“I’m not here to show anything to anyone. I have the opportunity to lead India, that in itself is a great thing for me. I do not practice this sport to show anything to anyone. I’m good enough. I’ll see in the future, if not more than anything, I’m just focusing on what I can bring to this series,” Pandya said.
