Exclusive: Why are Indians giving up citizenship and investing in other countries?





“Earlier this year, a statistical report revealed that a record number of Indians applied to renounce their Indian citizenship last year. More than 1,60,000 Indian nationals have renounced their Indian citizenship in 2021. Needless to say, these are all wealthy people who can afford citizenship abroad. India does not provide for dual nationality, so if they want a nationality of another country, these wealthy Indians tend to renounce their Indian nationality. Since 2017, more than 9 Lakh Indians have renounced their citizenship. If we talk about the data of 2021, the maximum number of people who obtained US citizenship, followed by Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. What this data tells us is that an increasing number of Indians are willing to renounce their citizenship and there seems to be a trend towards this. But how do you renounce your nationality and obtain that of another country? What is the process? Why can they do it?
