VIJAYAWADA / SRIKAKULAM: One of 9,400 international travelers who have arrived in the state since December 1 has tested positive for Covid-19. Samples taken from the leaflet, which originated in Krishna District, were sent to the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) for genome sequencing to determine if it is infected with the Omicron variant.

According to senior health ministry officials, Visakhapatnam has received 1,480 international passengers in the past seven days.

In November, five foreign returnees (two of whom returned from the United States and one from Ireland) tested positive. All five leaflets were reported to be in good health at present. Of the five, two are each in Anantapur and Srikakulam, and one in Vizianagaram. Samples from each have been sent to CCMB for genome sequencing and results are awaited. Primary and secondary contacts of people who test positive are sought.

Meanwhile, samples from a foreign returnee at Ummilada de Santhabommali mandal in Srikakulam tested positive on Tuesday, authorities declared the village a containment area. According to district collector Shrikesh Latkhar, the 51-year-old returned from South Africa via London, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam on November 23. His samples were sent for analysis two days ago. Health officials sent his samples to CCMB-Hyderabad for genome sequencing. However, DMHO Jagannadharao, in a press release, said the patient returned from Brazil by plane.

Speaking to TNIE, DMHO said that after reaching Vizag, the passenger left for his village by car. “A few days later he fell ill and on Sunday (December 5) he went to the Borubadra primary health center, where he was diagnosed with Covid-19. We will only know if it is infected with Omicron, Delta, Delta Plus or any other variant after the CCMB submits its report, ”he said.

The patient and his family members are now isolated at home. The official urged residents not to panic since the person is now in good health. “The whole village has been disinfected. Efforts are underway to find his secondary contacts, ”he said.
