This follows on the close relationships between Usain, Digicel and Irie Jam Radio at the Reebok Grand Prix in late May when Usain first created pandemonium by smashing Asafa Powell's sprint record to become a contender for the title of the fastest man on earth. We will also work with sponsors Western Union, Pay-o-matic and Grace Kennedy to decorate the "Veronica Campbell-Brown" Media Tent which will honor our Olympic Queens at the event. The food court will also be re-named the "Caribbean Olympic Village" to honor all Caribbean athletes who competed at the Olympic Games this year. Carlton Grant Jr. AKA 'Little Wayne' more popularly known as ‘Carlie’ from the movie (Shottas), son of veteran dance hall artiste Spragga Benz (Carlton Grant Sr.) was killed by the Police in Downtown Kingston Jamaica early Sunday morning (8-24-08). According to eye witness reports; when young Carlton was accosted by the police he placed his hands in the air before being shot the first time. Another eye witness claimed that the police went and stood over him and shot him a second time. His body was then thrown into the back of the vehicle and he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Upset residents denied the police claim that the teen had a gun.

He had a very bright future ahead of him being the recipient of five subject passes in the recent CXC examinations. West Indian Times express our sincere condolence to Spragga and the Grant Family.

Lovindeer to pen Olympic song

Lloyd Lovindeer, known for his humorous lyrics, said that Jamaica's outstanding performance in the recently concluded Olympics has inspired him to join other artistes by putting pen to paper. "I have to do it ... the athletes were magnificent, electrifying and, in the case of Usain Bolt, thunderous," said Lovindeer. He said Jamaicans can expect a song this week, and promises that it will be just as amazing as our athletes. "Jamaicans can expect the same vibe that would normally be in my songs," he said. Artistes Mavado, Derrick Harriott, Konshens and Elephant Man have already paid their tributes to our athletes in song. During the '70s, Lovindeer was a member of a vocal group called the Fabulous Flames, but had little success until he decided to go solo. His self-produced single Blinking Bus went to number one and paved the way for his career. In 1988, Hurricane Gilbert ravaged Jamaica and Lovindeer's track Wild Gilbert, in his trademark humorous style, went straight to number one and still remains his biggest hit. After Usain Bolt's first world- record run on May 31, in New York, he recorded a song titled Run Like The Wind. Lovindeer said he is not just an artiste who awaits occasions to make his music. "If you stop to think, I have a lot of number ones, such as Pocomania Day, Government Boops and Don't Bend Down," he said. "Lovindeer as a writer ... has captured the lyrics and he's very good at it," he added.

Richie puts patriotism where music is

Singer Richie Stephens is known for his snappy outfits, a number of those on show at the 2008 edition of his 'Take Me Away' concert in April. There was, however, one outfit that was not so much designed to impress with cut and colour, the black, green and gold already expressing his heart. Chances are, then, that when Stephens left for the United States last Wednesday morning he packed his Jamaica suit. Maybe it is the one he wears on the cover of his latest album, Come to Jamaica."As a concerned Jamaican each time I talk to people, especially abroad, there is this negativity that they have been absorbing about Jamaica," Stephens said. He will have a chance to dispel some of that negativity, performing at the high-profile Independence Ball in Manhattan, a Caribbean festival in Philadelphia, and Caribbean Day in the Shea Stadium in the New York Mets final day at the famed baseball ground. In the mix is also a United States launch of Come to Jamaica at the Club Sutra, Manhattan. Stephens explained that he had been doing the 'Islands in the Park' series, including performances in Florida, Washington, DC, New Jersey and New York. While the Come to Jamaica album is new, putting his patriotism into song isn't. Stephens said that "about eight years ago I did a song called Jamaica Land We Love. About two years after that that I did Come to Jamaica (the title song of the album). It was a song I had put down in my studio for several years". The song was used in the Cricket World Cup promotion, complete with a video, and after the bats and balls were put down Stephens met with Tourism Minister Ed Bartlett. "We managed to put together some things beneficial to us and we are doing some wonderful things in the world," Stephens said. An interview with 'Island Stylee' led to a guest speaker slot at the in-flight magazine's 10th anniversary awards function and Air Jamaica's involvement. In addition to the title song, a live version of the National Anthem (sung just after Usain Bolt broke the 100m world record), Circle Jamaica, Jamaican Sunshine, Negril and Caribbean People are on the 15-song CD. "I would like to start a trend, that I am promoting all that is positive about Jamaica in my music. I know there are positives, but they are not being sung about," Stephens said. "Terrible things are happening, but wonderful things are happening."

Trumpeter Dizzy Moore is dead

TRUMPETER JOHNNY 'Dizzy' Moore, a founding member of the Skatalites band, died on Saturday at the age of 69. Moore succumbed to cancer at a friend's home, said musicologist. Herbie Miller, who knew the musician for more than 30 years. Moore had been ailing for some time and was recently discharged from hospital.Miller hailed Moore as the "most creative thinking musician of the ska period".Moore is the sixth member of the legendary band to die. Trombonist Don Drummond, keyboardist Jackie Mittoo, saxophonists Tommy McCook and Roland Alphonso and Jerome 'Jah Jerry' Hinds predeceased him. The band, which formed in 1964, still tours with three surviving members: bassist Lloyd Brevette, drummer Lloyd Knibbs and saxophonist Lester Sterling. Moore was born in Kingston and got his musical training at the Alpha Boys School in St Andrew. Because of his choice of instrument, he was nicknamed 'Dizzy' after the great American trumpeter, Dizzy Gillespie. Like Moore, McCook, Drummond and Sterling attended Alpha. Along with Alphonso, they formed the classic Skatalites horn section that played on enduring songs like, Freedom Sounds, Guns of Navarone, Confucius and Eastern Standard Time. The original band stayed together for just over one year, recording for various producers before splitting up. Moore went on to play at Studio One for producer Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd and at the rival Treasure Isle which was run by Arthur 'Duke' Reid. The Skatalites reformed in 1982 and have toured the United States and Europe many times, winning new fans and earning two Grammy nominations for Best Reggae Album. Moore never figured for long in the revived band, reportedly due to differences with McCook. He toured the US with Bunny Wailer and recorded with new roots-reggae acts, such as Yami Bolo. In recent years, Moore became an in-demand source on early Jamaican pop music and life at Alpha during the 1940s. And in recent times received an OD for his contribution to the music industry. Johnny 'Dizzy' Moore is survived by his mother, four children and grandchildren.

Memorial for Bernie Mac scheduled in Chicago Saturday

Bernie Mac Sells Cars in Transformers

Thousands of people, including some faces from the big and small screens, are expected to attend a public memorial for actor and Chicago favorite son Bernie Mac. Mayor Richard Daley also says he plans to attend Saturday's memorial at the House of Hope church on the city's South Side. The 50-year-old Mac died in Chicago last Saturday from what his publicist says are complications from pneumonia.

He had been at Northwestern Memorial Hospital since the middle of July. Mac was born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough in Chicago. His successful career included having his own Fox television series "The Bernie Mac Show" and starring roles in "Ocean's Eleven," "Bad Santa," "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "Transformers."

Oh, baby! - Zein Bell Willis: A runway child

It seemed like something ordained by the gods, gracing the cover of SHE Caribbean magazine, while still in the womb, baby Zein Bell Willis effortlessly entered the fashion world, grabbing the attention of many from the bulge of her supermodel mother Nadine. Zein again thrilled audiences at this year's Caribbean Fashionweek at the National Indoor Sports Centre in June. She made two appearances on the catwalk. First, in a stroller, pushed by her mother, and then in the arms of Trinidadian designer, Claudia Pegus.According to her mother, three-month-old Zein is at home in front of the lens. The Gucci model recounted that Zein slept as she strolled with her on the catwalk, but, once she was awake, she did not make a stir. Nadine believes that Zein's birth will not hinder her career. And, given the unpredictability of the industry, will not leave Zein behind if called up for duties. Nadine says that her nine-year-old Tatjana has expressed an interest in pursuing a career in modelling. However, she would not be putting any pressure on her children to follow in her footsteps. "My kids have to choose their own careers, as long it's not something that's going to destroy their lives, I will support them," she said.

More than just music - Etana launches album and merchandise

BY NOW, fans would have known that Etana's debut album, The Strong One, is in stores, but what they may not have been privy to is that everyone can now have their own 'piece of the artiste'. On Sunday night, when the singer asked fans and guests to join her at Strawberry Hill for the official launch of The Strong One, there was more than just music in store. Bolstered by the idyllic surroundings and a warm reception, Etana, along with members of her management team, unveiled a line of novelty items, each emblazoned with her likeness. In the offing are coffee mugs, 'doggie' tags, T-shirts and student notebooks. A member of Etana's management team said these products were not necessarily introduced to boost album sales - which are doing "good" - but are part of a wider marketing package. "It's 'Brand Etana' and once it's representing her, everything else will fall into place," explains Kadine Reynolds, marketing manager, PCF Company Ltd, which is responsible for the items. "They're more of a keepsake, like having a piece of the artiste." With the artiste's popularity having no age limit, there is an item for everyone - the notebook seemingly the item of choice. With the new school term just around the corner, these items should be extremely popular, Reynolds tells The Gleaner. Though unsure of the price of the notebooks, she assures that they should be competitive. It was a five-year-old girl, who indirectly helped steer Etana, mother of one, onto the right path in terms of her music, so the singer plans to give back by visiting schools and offering not just her music, but words of inspiration. Etana, whose breakout hit, Wrong Address, explored the injustices suffered by persons living in the ghetto, at the hands of corporate employers, says her mission is to inspire children and create a foundation for the next generation, which includes her own son. The notebooks are available at Kingston Bookshops. Each Saturday, for this month, Etana will be conducting autograph-signing sessions at select stores. The album, which is being distributed by VP Records, contains tracks such as the popular Roots, I Am Not Afraid and her current hit, Warrior Love.

Gospel show closes Denbigh

It was a spiritual affair for the massive crowd which turned out at the Jamaica Broilers-sponsored Gospel Rama at Denbigh Agricultural and Industrial Show last Sunday night. The concert brought down the curtains on the 56th annual event. At 5 p.m., the venue was already jam-packed for the six o'clock start. Shelly Ann Watson was the first performer called to duty by MC Olecia Wedderburn. Watson did her last year Gospel Festival Song Year Of The Church. The May Pen gospel group, Vibes, was next and performed the song Beulah Land. The dreadlocked Ziggy Soul captivated the audience and had them singing along as he performed Genesis, Proverb and Sing It Out. The audience, however, got into the spirit of things with Robert and Genieve Bailey's one-hour performance with God Is Good, Salvation Medley, Clay and Preacher Man. Omari was able to get the crowd in a responsive mood when he did his new Kurt Riley-produced single Why. His other efforts Soldier, Tell Me A Who and Help held the momentum. Carlene Davis' one-hour set was very entertaining as she had the audience in the jam-packed venue in a dancing mood throughout her stint. Her repertoire included Stand Up And Tell Me, God Is, Amen and Never Give Up Jesus. There were big shouts from the audience during Grace Thriller's act as they performed Never Give Up Jesus, Too Much To Gain To Lose, Shady Green Pastures, Teardrops, Sunrise and I Surrender. DJ Nicholas introduction to the stage sent the audience into a frenzy. The top-flight gospel DJ went into a 'bag of goodies', which included Step Out, Back To The Owner, Pop Off The Word and No Drugs Down Here. His song Warrior created high energy as he had the audience dancing, jumping and waving rags.

Isaac Hayes, the pioneering singer, songwriter and musician whose relentless "Theme From Shaft" won Academy and Grammy awards, was found unconscious at his home, and rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead on Sunday, August 10th. He was 65.   Along with Al Green, James Brown and Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes was one of the dominant black artists in the early 1970s.   Hayes, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, would have turned 66 on August 20.  The Shelby County Sheriff's Office says a family member found Hayes unresponsive near a treadmill on Sunday.  He was pronounced dead about an hour later at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis. The cause of death was not immediately known.  In the early 1970s, Hayes laid the groundwork for disco, for what became known as urban-contemporary music and for romantic crooners like Barry White. And he was rapping before there was rap.  His career hit another high in 1997 when he became the voice of Chef, the sensible school cook and devoted ladies man on the animated TV show 'South Park'.

(CNN Report Saturday, Aug. 9)  Bernie Mac, the Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated actor and comedian who worked his way to Hollywood success from an impoverished upbringing on Chicago’s South Side, died Saturday, August 9th at age 50.  “Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital,” his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles.  She said no other details were available and asked that his family’s privacy be respected.  The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body’s organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.  Recently, Mac’s brand of comedy caught him flack when he was heckled during a surprise appearance at a July fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate and fellow Chicagoan Barack Obama.  Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine, Mac joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language. The performance earned him a rebuke from Obama’s campaign.  But despite controversy or difficulties, in his words, Mac was always a performer.   “Wherever I am, I have to play,” he said in 2002. “I have to put on a good show.”  Mac started his comedy career at age 8, with a standup performance at a church dinner. In 1977, at age 20, he took that act to comedy clubs in Chicago.  His film career started with a small role as a club doorman in the Damon Wayans movie “Mo’ Money” in 1992. Mac went on to star in the “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise with Brad Pitt and George Clooney and his turn with Ashton Kutcher in 2005’s “Guess Who?” — a remake of the Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn 1967 classic “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” — topped the box office.  Mac also had starring roles in “Bad Santa,” “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” and “Transformers.”  The comedian drew critical and popular acclaim with his Fox television series “The Bernie Mac Show,” which aired more than 100 episodes from 2001 to 2006.  The series about a man’s adventures raising his sister’s three children won a Peabody Award in 2002. At the time, judges wrote they chose the sitcom for transcending “race and class while lifting viewers with laughter, compassion — and cool.”  The show garnered Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for Mac. He also was nominated for a Grammy award for best comedy album in 2001 along with his “The Original Kings of Comedy” co-stars, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Cedric The Entertainer.  In 2007, Mac told David Letterman on CBS’s “Late Show” that he planned to retire soon.  “I’m going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit,” Mac told Letterman. “I missed a lot of things, you know. I was a street performer for two years. I went into clubs in 1977.”  Mac was born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough on Oct. 5, 1957, in Chicago. He grew up on the city’s South Side, living with his mother and grandparents. His grandfather was the deacon of a Baptist church.  In his 2004 memoir, “Maybe You Never Cry Again,” Mac wrote about having a poor childhood — eating bologna for dinner — and a strict, no-nonsense upbringing.  Mac’s mother died of cancer when he was 16. In his book, Mac said she was a support for him and told him he would surprise everyone when he grew up.  “Woman believed in me,” he wrote. “She believed in me long before I believed.”

West Indian Times sends condolences to all Bernie's family and friends.  He will most certainly be missed.

Bernie Mac, gone but never to be forgotten.  May his soul rest in everlasting peace.

Danny Glover's Haiti film lacked 'white heroes', producers said

PARIS, France (AFP): US actor Danny Glover, who plans an epic next year on Haitian independence hero Toussaint-Louverture, said he slaved to raise funds for the movie because financiers complained there were no white heroes. "Producers said 'It's a nice project, a great project... where are the white heroes?'" he told AFP during a stay in Paris this month for a seminar on film. "The first question you get, is 'Is it a black film?' All of them agree, it's not going to do good in Europe, it's not going to do good in Japan. Somebody has to prove that to be a lie!", he said. "Maybe I'll have the chance to prove it." The "Lethal Weapon" co-star, just turned 62, finally raised 18 of the 30 million dollars needed from a Venezuelan cultural body set up in 2006 by his friend President Hugo Chavez to counter what he termed "the Hollywood film dictatorship". Venezuelan filmmakers last year slammed the investment. "It is Mr Glover who should be bringing dollars to Venezuela," the National Association of Film Makers and the Venezuelan Chamber of Film Producers said in an open letter.  History, Glover said, had enabled him to play a wide range of roles because of the changes taking place in society. "I think cinema has played a great role in our re-imagining ourselves," he said.

Bob Marley statue to be erected in Serbia

BELGRADE, Serbia (AFP): A statue of late Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley is to be erected in the tiny Serbian hamlet of Banatski Sokolac, organisers of a rock music festival there said Thursday. "We are honoured to announce that the first monument in Europe of the reggae legend Bob Marley will be erected in Banatski Sokolac," said the Internet site of the "Rock Village" festival. "Our village thus enters into history and supporters and all those who respect this 'liberty fighter armed with a guitar' can take part in the unveiling ceremony" on August 23, it added. Last year, two other Serbian villages put up statues of Johnny Weissmuller, the late actor famed for his role as "Tarzan", and Sylvester Stallone's famous film character "Rocky Balboa". The rock festival, first held in the northeastern village in 2005, will be opened by Del Arno Band, one of the most influential reggae groups in the Balkans, and Jamaican act Ras Abraham & the Irie Vibes.

Their legacy ought to be recognized by us, reggae kindred here in the US, particularly during the Labor Day weekend celebrations" Grant noted.  The decision to honor the Caribbean athletes at Irie Jamboree 2k8, came on the heels of Usain Bolt's 100m (9.72secs) world record run at the Reebok Grand Prix at Ichan Stadium, in New York on Saturday, May 31 2008, an event that Grant's company, Irie Jam Media has served as Caribbean media partner for the past three years.  "At Irie Jam Media, we have long recognized the synergy created by two indigenous Jamaican products - reggae music and sport. We are very committed to further explore the potential of these two areas toward the sustainable economic development of our beloved island home. Our participation in the Reebok Grand Prix (track & field meet) is testament to our efforts in the melding of these areas. This year, our flagship summer event Irie Jamboree, is themed to celebrate our incredible athletes and to give further credence to our articulated commitment of ensuring that the Caribbean does not miss out on the opportunities created by what is its by birthright" Grant noted.  As another goodwill gesture, the VIP and media tents will be named the "Usain 'Lighting' Bolt VIP Tent" and the "Veronica Campbell- Brown Media Booth" to honor Bolt's historic, world record run at the Reebok meet, and for Mrs. Campbell-Brown's consistent performance at the event since its inception. The Art & Craft area at the festival will be named the "Caribbean Olympic Village" in honor of all Caribbean athletes, who will compete at this year's summer Olympics.  Irwine Clare, CEO of Team Jamaica Bickle, an organization that has had a very close association with Irie Jam Media and by extension Irie Jamboree and the Reebok Grand Prix said, "the organizers of Irie jamboree must be commended for their appreciation of the impact of our Caribbean athletes on the world stage and also for incorporating and heralding their achievements in the theme for this year's concert. Being an Olympic year, coupled with the fact that the existing world record for 100 meters was established right here in New York, lends additions rationale and significance of the plans for this year. Team Jamaica Bickle lauds Irie Jamboree for this steadfast support of Caribbean athletics. Lets come out and celebrate our athletes, our ambassador" he said.  Among the reggae acts slated to perform at Irie Jamboree 2k8 are Tarrus Riley, Coco Tea, Sizzla, Beenieman, Elephant Man, Serani, Bugle, DeMarco and Hero. More acts are to be announced soon.  Log on to www.iriejamboree.com or call 1-888-irie-nyc for updates.

Mr. Vegas Delivers Explosive Performances in Europe

As the summer season unfolded in Europe, thousands of revelers descended on the vast continent to attend a number of highly publicized Reggae music festivals. Many elite members of the Dancehall music fraternity were billed for the events and Mr. Vegas scored among the best.  It had been five years since Dancehall star Mr. Vegas toured Europe. And in an effort to make up for lost time, the popular singjay brought fans up-to-speed with his repertoire of soaring hits by consistently delivering fiery performances at every stop along the way. Mr. Vegas' lasting effect on the European massive is truly undeniable, as calls for his next European tour have flooded his management.  "I truly appreciate the support that my fans in Europe have given me over years," says Mr. Vegas. "I have spent five years away and I really wanted to pay them back with unforgettable performances.......my plan was successful!"  Mr. Vegas' European tour, sponsored by Media Com, consisted of 10 cities. On the tour, he was joined by a full ensemble including Thugz band, DJ Fatta and High Energy dancers. Mr. Vegas injected the unique and attention-grabbing format of a DJ and live band combination into his stage show. This style, which alternated between DJ Fatta spinning hot selections from pioneer dancehall artists and Thugz band playing Mr. Vegas' rhythms, was a sure-fire hit with the fans. Adding Mr. Vegas' High Energy dancers to the mix made for an even zestier recipe.   While in Cologne, Germany at Summerjam, Mr. Vegas was billed as the closing act, following Queen Ifrica, Busy Signal, Cecile and a host of other Jamaican artists. The singjay brought the festival to an energy-fueled close, executing nothing short of a 1 ½ hour spectacular set. Adorned in a black Armani suit, Gucci shirt and alligator skin Prada shoes, Mr. Vegas fulfilled the thousands in attendance with a show that measured up to his attire. Singing scores of hits, he also moved the audience with a cover of Bob Marley's "Turn Your Lights Down Low." Ultimately, his rendition prompted patrons to wave their cell phones in the air, creating a glowing effect.  Mr. Vegas' stint at Rototom Sunsplash in Osoppo, Italy was equally explosive. On this line-up, he joined members of the dancehall massive including Voicemail, Bugle and Wayne Marshall to name a few. Due to a heavy rain storm, for a moment, it looked as if Mr. Vegas wouldn't perform. But low and behold, the rain let up and dancehall's most swank artist belted out an infinite string of hits – altering the "dampened" mood of the event. Thousands of fans rushed to the performance area to be a part of the Mr. Vegas experience.   After almost two hours in to his set at Rototom Sunsplash, the crowd begged for more. Still in designer gear, but a little more laid back, Mr. Vegas killed it. Because the whole show was phenomenal, no one segment can be highlighted. It's clear that the precise coordination between Mr. Vegas and Thugz band played a major role in this extraordinary performance.   Although Mr. Vegas was not the official closing act of The Big Reggae Festival in Antibes, France, he still managed to drive the crowd wild. In a compact set (due to the show getting a late start), he wooed the crowd, capitalizing on techniques from past successful performances. Some time after his segment, Mr. Vegas was asked to join the wildly popular French Dancehall group Dub Inc. on stage to close the show with his hit "Mus Come a Road." Mr. Vegas belted out the favorite, while Dub Inc. laced the rhythm with French vocals. The audience erupted in adulation.  "Mr. Vegas' performances in Europe exceeded my expectations," says manager Garfield "Chin" Bourne of Irish and Chin, Inc. "I think that Vegas understands the importance of giving quality, flawless shows......he definitely has mastered the live performance thing."  In August 2008, Mr. Vegas will embark on his first tour of Africa and return to Europe for a long-awaited tour of the UK. Mr. Vegas' emanating presence is undeniable. As you read this, the singjay is leaving his imprint on the world. In several markets, Mr. Vegas has songs and videos in heavy rotation including the summer anthems "Mus Come a Road," "Hot Gal Nuh Fight Ova Man" and the newest sensation "Daggering." And notably, Mr. Vegas boasts the #4 tune on the Billboard Dance Chart, "Shake it Up."  Mr. Vegas burst on the scene in 1997 with the break-through smashes "Heads High" and "Nike Air." The mainstay artist has since unleashed over a decade of countless dancehall hits and standards. Through good music and hard work, Mr. Vegas has maintained a consistent presence on the dancehall scene. In the Summer of 2007, Mr. Vegas released his fifth studio album Hot It Up (Delicious Vinyl) to raving reviews -- which landed the racy "Hot Wuk" on the Billboard charts. Also in 2007, Mr. Vegas signed on to Irish and Chin, Inc. to manage his career.

New York Irie Yam Jam Weather's The Storm

Despite the wind, large hail, lightning, thunder and constant down pouring of rain throughout the day on Sunday, July 27th, Irie Jam Media made the decision that the Caribbean cultural food festival would go on for those who braved the weather to attend.  It turned out to be a wise decision as the event turned out to be a great one.  West Indian Times arrived in the park once the rain stopped after 6pm and we were in time to see Third World about to take the stage.  It was amazing to see the amount of Caribbean lovers of all ages who braved the weather to attend the Yam Jam.  The patrons loved Third World who belted out hit after hit after hit!  They began with 'Reggae Ambassador' and went into 'Satta Massagana', '96 Degrees', 'Try Jah Love', 'Now That We Found Love'  and many other favorites from their vast catalogue of music.  The band was energetic and really set the pace for the evening.  Next on stage was Lushy who impressed the crowd with his hit 'Obama'; Cowskin who delighted the crowd with his energetic song about Dalmatian dogs and Cherry Rock who had a lovely lovers rock tune.  The three artists proved to be winners with the crowd and the fact that they went on after a major act showed that Irie Jam Media has respect for upcoming artists.  Next on stage was Byron Lee & the Dragonaires (minus Byron Lee who was ill and unable to appear).  The band was amazing, they began with 'Blame It On The Music' and went into a slew of Soca and Reggae hits that the patrons loved.  It was a beautiful set.  Towards the end of the night Oliver Samuels appeared (his plane had been delayed by the weather) and although he was too late to MC the show he delighted the audience as always.  For those who did not make it to the Yam Jam due to the weather, they missed an awesome evening of fun in  the park.  Now just imagine what Irie Jamboree is going to be like on Labor Day Weekend!
