SURVIVING
IN AMERICA By
Curtis Webley
This
is an extremely realistic tale of two young Jamaican boys who
grew up poor and fatherless in Jamaica. Ragweed, illiterate,
turned to drugs and crime at an early age in order to survive
while his friend Amin strived to be the best he could be by
making the most of his educational opportunities. Both make
their way to the United States and meet again as young men in
Chicago where Ragweed is a big time ‘druggist’ and Amin
struggles to be respected in a country of people that ignore his
brilliance and see him as a third class citizen from a foreign
country.
The novel is hilarious in parts as each page tells of cultural
differences that these two young men have to overcome. Anyone
who has traveled to the US from another country will most
definitely relate to this story and find it most enjoyable. -
